Sydney University Women's Rowing Club (SUWRC) was formed in the late 1960s and has produced many champion oarswomen. Club members compete successfully in club regattas, intervarsity, state, national and international levels.
The University recognises and celebrates our successes and last year an outstanding seven oarswomen were awarded with University Blues (The top University sporting award), with one, Liz Kell, being made Blue of the Year.
2008 will be a great year for the Club. We will have two of our number in the Olympic Eight, one in the Australian Lightweight Quad scull, 8 in the NSW team and 2 in the Tasmanian team. We will also host the annual 3 race series, the Trans Tasman Universities Challenge, in July and last year won the right to boat the lightweight quad and eight representing all Australian Universities. We will defend many trophies and our overall win the Australian Universities Games Rowing in September in Sydney. We are also currently planning to send an eight to the Head of the Charles in October.
Currently, most women train on Sydney Harbour from the Boathouse at the end of Ferry Road, Glebe. Some high performance program oarswomen train on the Lane Cove River from St Ignatius College Riverview, an interim arrangement while the high performance centre is rebuilt following a fire in 2006.
SUWRC seeks to attract athletic university students to join its elite and development programs. While rowing experience is not necessary commitment is required as rowing is a year-round sport with athletes training most days at 5.30am on the water and doing gym work, cycling and other land training. SUWRC also has a masters (over 27 years) program taking in graduates and staff of the University.
Coaches Phil Bourguignon, Alan Bennett and Mark Prater run the high performance and development programs and can provide information to interested athletes about the requirements for being an elite oarswoman at Sydney University.
